How to Get Through the First Couple of Weeks after a Death

Working your way through the first few days and weeks after the death of a family member can be extremely challenging. Many people manage all the funeral service arrangements as well as funeral home visitation and that can be a very busy time.

But once they have dealt with all the formalities of the funeral service and most of their friends and relatives go back to their lives, immediate family members always find that their grief hits them like a tidal wave in this period. Here are some ways in which you can get through these first few weeks post the death of a loved one:

  • Don’t keep wondering when things will get back to normal. When a family member passes away, there are a number of different things you need to look into and misunderstandings and tensions are part and parcel of family life in these few weeks. Just focus on being calm and deal with everything with a certain amount of tolerance and patience but don’t pressure yourself to feel normal.
     
  • You will find yourself dealing with dividing up the mementos and belongings of the deceased person. If he/she hasn’t left behind a will, it can be difficult to decide which person gets what. In this situation, you need to work with your family and reach amicable solutions and may have to compromise a bit along the way.
     
  • You need to be able to differentiate between the things that you can hold on to and the ones you need to let go of. Don’t try to hang onto every single thing the person owned; focus more on the memories you shared.
